Peter Field 1942-2024
We remember one of our early Front Row players with fondness,
Peter was a talented draughtsman, designer, engineer, entrepreneur, innovator and businessman. He used his early career in the motor industry as a springboard into automotive design and engine development allied to his long and successful motor racing career.
Peter worked in the avionics industry, helping to develop new innovations for the Harrier jump jet.
When he started dealing in art and antiques Peter of course spent many hours at the V&A studying ceramics.
Peters strong engineering training helped him develop his own ideas and designs, becoming a successful toy and garden accessory designer, manufacturer and marketer.
Alongside all these other successes he also became a very well known and respected horticulturist.
Memories:
- Peter was a talented designer and I was fortunate to learn a great deal from him in 1960’s drawing offices. (Dave Gridley)
- Peter, with his immense strength, made first team loose-head in his first full season starting a lifelong front row friendship. (Wayne Nicholls)
- Armchair ride and lifelong friendship; with Wayne and Peter propping my job was made much easier. (Ron Divey SA)
- Always a privilege to play alongside Peter. (Bob Mordell)
- Pete was an uncompromising front row forward in the days when scummaging was all that was expected of a prop - and boy could Pete scrummage. He was also a prominent and popular figure when it came to social events and was always at the hub of what was going on in the Club. Pete was also a great cook and for a couple of years we all benefitted from training runs on a Thursday evening from Pete's house in Hampton Wick which were always followed by one of his fantastic curries or chillis. Later I was very grateful that Pete decided to play on in the Vets team, which he did with his trademark commitment and enthusiasm. He leaves a big hole but has an everlasting place in the history of Thamesians. (Alfie Mitchell)
- Peter may have helped protect me from unjust retaliation. (Jimmy Brickell)
Our club was well represented at Peter’s funeral in Arundel on 31st Jan 2024.
